Case Study: No Lectures Missed with AREC at the Romanian-American University.

Updated: Oct 9

Dear ADENA Partners, this month’s case study focuses on the Romanian-American University, a private institution based in Bucharest, Romania. By implementing AREC LS-200 Media Stations, the university has digitally transformed its key academic spaces, including the Senate Hall and the Aula, equipping them with modern, high-quality lecture capture solutions that are straightforward for both teachers and students to use. Read on to learn more about this project.

The Romanian-American University was founded in 1991 to combine American educational values with Romanian traditions and promote excellence in teaching, research, and related fields. Despite its relatively short history, the university has steadily risen through Romania’s higher education ranks, earning accreditations – including a ‘High confidence rating’ from ARACIS in 2010 – and forming partnerships with prestigious institutions such as the University of Siena. It continues to grow, launching new schools and programmes while constantly evolving to achieve its mission.

The university is also closely following developments in learning technologies and lecture capture. To enhance accessibility and interactivity for students and staff, it recently began a digital transformation of its key academic spaces, the Senate Hall and Aula. Although these rooms already had some AV equipment, upgrades were needed to meet growing demands, including modern projection and display systems, a contemporary voting and discussion system, centralised AV control, and recording and streaming capabilities for on-demand access to lectures and events.

The university selected a solution developed by our partner in Romania, GBC®. At its centre is the LS-200 Media Station, a 2-channel model designed for reliable, high-quality recording and streaming of audio and video. The station combines video sources with custom user graphics, such as overlays and backgrounds, to produce professional-looking mixed videos at a moment’s notice. At the same time, it records the video sources independently, giving users the material they need for post-editing, should that be required. For streaming, the LS-200 supports all major platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn, among others. It can output up to two streams simultaneously via RTP/RTMP(S) and up to six local RTSP streams, which can be used for monitoring, relaying content to another auditorium, or other purposes.

The university employs LS-200 Media Stations in both the Senate Hall and the Aula. In these spaces, the stations are paired with network cameras for video and a Televic discussion system for audio. In the Senate Hall, the station delivers video to the new projection systems, while in the Aula it outputs to two upgraded projectors and large side displays. The entire solution is managed via an integrated Extron control system, making it exceptionally easy for university staff and students to operate.
