Selecting and configuring audio sources on AREC Media Stations

In this lesson we focus on the “Media I/O” → “Audio” page in the “Administrator” interface.

Configuring audio sources on an AREC Media Station

All AREC stations are able to get audio from multiple different sources simultaneously. Which audio inputs and how many are allowed depends on your Media Station model. You can verify which inputs are supported on your station by checking the station's user manual or AREC Media Station comparison table on our website www.a-dena.com


Connected audio sources are mixed into a single audio channel on AREC Media Stations. This combined audio remains the same on all outputs of the Media Station. It is not possible to separate audio channels directly in the Media Station, and if you have such requirements, you must use third-party devices or software to split or manage audio channels.


Media Stations mix the combined audio channel with video automatically, ensuring that the user does not need to use a video editor after recording. Audio is mixed on all recordings produced by the Media Station: mixed video and original video channel recordings.


Individual audio channel recording on the LS-860/LS-860N


The only exception to this is the LS-860/LS-860N model, which allows selecting individual audio inputs for original video channel recordings. For example, it is possible to select Channel 1 to use audio from either HDMI 1, Line input for HDMI 1, or the station's mixed audio, while keeping all audio mixed in the mixed video and outputs of the station. This can be configured through the "Administrator" → "Video" → "Recording" page of the station, under "Audio source settings".



"Audio" page



On all AREC Media Stations, audio inputs are configured through the “Administrator” web page → “Media I/O” → “Audio”. At the top of the page are “Input volume control” settings. They allow changing the audio level of all connected sources, selecting audio sources, and, depending on the model of your Media Station, adjusting the gain. You can also mute or unmute an input by clicking the speaker icon next to it.


Here is how you can connect all types of supported audio inputs:


  • 3.5mm line, mic, and balanced inputs: simply plug them in the station’s input jacks. Line input is labelled as a “speaker” icon, mic input as a “microphone icon”, and line output is marked with a “headset” icon.

  • USB (UAC) audio input: on the latest stations (e.g. LS-210, LS-310, LS-410), connect the device and select it from the list of USB audio inputs on this page. On the TI-series models (e.g. LS-200, LS-400, KL-3T), the first UAC device that is connected to a station is used as the audio input.

  • HDMI inputs: simply plug them in the station’s HDMI input ports. However, if the device you are connecting is a computer, or another device with selectable audio outputs, you will need to select the Media Station (typically recognised as “CBOX”) as your device’s speakers. To record audio from a conferencing software or another such application with selectable audio outputs, you will need to select “CBOX” in every such application.   • RTP/RTSP/RTMP/ONVIF/NDI|HX/SRT streams: you will need to add these streams as video sources. Once connected, they are immediately available in the list as “IP Source 1/2/3/4”, depending on the channels they are selected in (“content” channel is “1”). The latest AREC Media Stations can take AAC-LC audio from every supported protocol. TI-series models can take audio only from RTP/RTMP sources.

  • Dante Audio: you can use the Dante Controller application or your device’s interface (if it allows that) to send audio to the Media Station. The latest AREC Media Stations support 2 Dante Audio inputs and 2 Dante Audio outputs. Note that on the latest AREC Media Stations running firmware 1.1.0.13 and newer, Dante Audio can be used only through the default WAN port of the Media Station. LAN ports of the Media Stations do not input or output Dante, even if their mode is set to WAN.

  • AM-600 and AM-601 wireless microphones: Media Stations made before 2022 feature an antenna that must be used for pairing. To pair the positioner, simply stand close (1-2 metres) to the Media Station’s antenna and hold the pairing button until the blue LED starts flashing rapidly. The pairing will complete shortly after and when you reload the page, “Wireless mic” will appear in the audio inputs list. For all other models, as well as third-party devices, pairing requires AM-01B, a USB (UAC) device. Audio outputs


Other than audio inputs, you can also configure the volume of your recording and streaming output and other outputs of the station. You can mute or unmute outputs by clicking on the speaker icons next to them. Below the volume bar you will see an indicator for the current volume outputted by the Media Station.


To disable local audio output, simply turn off “Audio output loop through” setting.
