Graphical User Interface of AREC Media Stations and how to use it

In this lesson we describe the Graphical User Interface (GUI) – a control bar available on AREC Media Stations.

What is the GUI and where to find it?


The GUI is one of the most user-friendly ways of controlling AREC Media Stations and it is available on every AREC Media Station. It provides control over most of the key features of AREC Media Stations. Since the GUI is designed to assist the presenter and/or operator, it is only displayed on the station’s “Mixed video/GUI” output. It is not recorded, streamed, or displayed anywhere else.


On the latest AREC Media Stations (e.g. LS-210, LS-310, LS-410), the GUI is displayed through the “Display 1” output, together with the station's mixed video output.


On the TI-series models (e.g. LS-200, LS-300, LS-400) running the latest firmware version, the default mode is to display the GUI on both the HDMI and VGA output, as both outputs show “Mixed video/GUI”. This can be changed under “Video output settings” on the “Administrator” → “Media I/O” → “Display” page.


By default, the GUI is enabled, and will appear every time the Media Station is turned on. Control settings for it are found under “Display settings” on the “Administrator” → “Media I/O” → “Display” page. Toggle “OSD menu” to enable/disable GUI, or “OSD menu - Playback video” to only remove the playback feature from it.


To use the GUI, you will need to connect a USB HID device, such as a computer mouse or a touchscreen to the Media Station. All USB ports of the station can be used for that. On stations with built-in touchscreens, such as the KL-3T or KS-CC2T, there is no need to connect HID devices to use the GUI (although it can be done if needed).


Unless the GUI was disabled, clicking or tapping on the screen will make it appear (or hide it, if it was already displayed).



Functions of the GUI


Here is what each button and function of the GUI does:


  1. Dash (on both sides): click to minimise the GUI.

  2. Overlay: click to open a list of available overlays. Click on any overlay to apply it.

  3. Layout: click to open a list of available layouts. Click on any layout to apply it.

  4. Background: click to open a list of available backgrounds. Click on any background to apply it.

  5. Theme: click to open a list of available themes. Click on any theme to apply it.

  6. LIVE: indicates current streaming status. Red when the station is streaming, grey when not.

  7. Recording time: shows how long the station has been recording.

  8. Stream: click to start/stop streaming. This button is active only if at least one stream is set to “Enable streaming button” mode on the “Administrator” → “Video” → “Streaming” page.

  9. Record: click to start recording. When recording is in progress, this button changes to pause. Clicking will pause the recording. Click again to resume recording.

  10. Stop: click to stop the recording completely.

  11. Snapshot: click to take a snapshot of the mixed video output (does not capture GUI). If a recording is in progress, this creates a bookmark/timestamp in the recording.

  12. Playback: click to open a menu that lists all previously recorded videos. Click on a video to start its playback. If a USB drive is connected to the station, this menu can be used to download videos from the station. Tick the boxes next to videos you need and click the “arrow down” button to download them.

  13. Settings: click to open settings of the Media Station.

    • The first page shows general information about the station (Name and model, IP address, firmware version number)

    • The second page allows controlling audio output of the station and audio loop through settings

    • The third page allows controlling audio input of the station

    • The fourth page shows the current recording mode and related settings, scheduling status, CPU usage, and allows toggling fast upload mode on and off

    • The fifth page allows changing the station’s network settings

  14. PTZ control: click to open the PTZ control joystick (19).

  15. IP address: shows the WAN port IP address of the Media Station

  16. Audio: shows the audio input volume in the Media Station delayed by approximately 1 second.

  17. HDMI loop through control: click to cycle loop through modes on the HDMI output (mixed video, individual video channels, all video channels together). Loop through is explained in detail in Basics Lesson 8 “Video output of the Media Stations and loop through”.

  18. DP loop through control: click to cycle loop through modes on the DP output (mixed video, individual video channels, all video channels together). Loop through is explained in detail in Basics Lesson 8 “Video output of the Media Stations and loop through”.

  19. PTZ control joystick: use it to control video sources with a selected PTZ control mode. PTZ control mode is defined for each video channel on the “Administrator” → “Media I/O” → “Video inputs” page.

    • Click on a channel icon at the top to select which channel to control.

    • Click arrows to pan or tilt the device.

    • Click on “Home” to activate the home preset of the source.

    • Click on P0 to activate preset 0, P1 to activate preset 1, and so on.

    • Click “magnifying glass +” button to zoom in and “magnifying glass -” button to zoom out.

  20. Reposition: click to change the position of the PTZ control joystick.
