Configuring streaming settings on AREC Media Stations

In this lesson we go through the streaming page and settings of AREC Media Stations.

Streaming settings for AREC Media Stations

Streaming settings are configured through the “Administrator” → "Video" → “Streaming” page. At the top of the page you will find “Video compression” settings, where you are able to choose one of the predefined profiles, or make your own by selecting “User defined”. If you select “User defined”, an ellipsis (...) button will appear. Click this button to change resolution, bitrate, and h.264 profile. On AREC Media Stations, streaming profiles can be different from recording profiles, and so you can set a lower resolution for streaming if needed. However, your streaming resolution cannot be higher than the recording profile resolution, so if a resolution you need is not in the list, you must first increase the resolution of your recording profile. You can do so in the “Administrator” → "Video" → “Recording”.


Most streaming platforms provide a list of recommended parameters for streaming to them. For best experience, make sure to double-check these parameters before starting a livestream and adjust the streaming profile to match them.



Streaming settings


Further down this page is where you can set up the station’s streaming modes and links. On most AREC Media Stations, including the latest ones (e.g. LS-210, LS-310, LS-410), you will see two identically looking groups of settings called “Streaming settings” and “Streaming 2 settings”. Under both groups you will find a “Live streaming” drop-down menu, a “URL” field, and an ellipsis (...) button. On the latest AREC Media Stations, there is also a “Protocol” drop-down menu. Let’s review each option separately:


  1. “Live streaming” menu allows you to choose how the station will stream:

    • Off: no streaming.

    • Together with recording: streaming starts and stops with recording.

    • Streaming always: the station will continuously stream to the link you enter as long as it is valid.

    • Enable streaming button: streaming can be started and stopped separately from recording. When there is at least one stream with this mode selected, a button for livestreaming control activates in the GUI and Online Director. It also becomes possible to control streaming in other ways, e.g. by using RS-232/TCP commands.

  2. “Protocol” allows you to choose a protocol to use for this livestream. On the latest AREC Media Stations (e.g. LS-210, LS-310, LS-410), you can choose between RTMP/RTP or SRT. By default, RTMP/RTP is chosen and the options are identical to those of TI-series models. Note that all AREC Media Stations are also able to stream using RTMPS. To stream using RTMPS on the latest AREC Media Stations, choose RTMP/RTP in the “Protocol”.

  3. “URL” field is where you enter the server URL and stream key of the streaming platform. The format depends on the platform and your chosen protocol, but generally follows the pattern protocol://server URL/stream key

  4. Ellipsis (...) button allows you to enter username and password if it is required and to check connection.

Now that we have covered what options and fields there are for configuring streams, let’s create a couple of streams for practice.




How to livestream: RTMP example with YouTube


We will use YouTube for an RTMP streaming example.


Access YouTube Studio by clicking on your avatar on the top-right on YouTube, clicking “Create” → “Go live”, or another way.


To stream to YouTube, you will need to have the streaming feature unlocked for your account. It is also recommended to adjust your streaming settings on the Media Station. At the time of writing, YouTube’s official guidelines recommend setting bitrate between 3Mbps and 10Mbps for 1080p30 streaming. Thus, we need to change “Video compression” to “User defined” and select 8Mbps bitrate.

Next, we need to take the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio and enter them in the “URL” field. Server URL is called Stream URL on YouTube and is found at the top of the “Stream settings” tab. You only need to copy the primary URL, which in our example is:



The stream key can be copied from the top of the page, on the edge of the preview window. Create a new key or copy the existing key. In our example, it is:

Now you can copy both these elements into the “URL” field in the Media Station. Copy the Server URL first, then insert a forward slash (/) symbol, then paste the stream key. Using the URL and key from our example, the link will look as follows:



This is all that is needed to start a livestream. If you haven’t yet changed the livestreaming mode, you can do so now and start livestreaming.

How to livestream: SRT example with Vimeo


SRT is a newer, open source, point-to-point streaming protocol that is steadily gaining popularity for its advantages. It is defined by its low-latency and great performance in unpredictable networks. It passes firewalls easily and has configurable encryption to ensure that content is protected. The latest AREC Media Stations (e.g. LS-210, LS-310, LS-410) support all three ways in which SRT can work: Caller, Listener, and Rendezvous. We will use Vimeo for an SRT streaming example.


Selecting external encoder

Access Vimeo and create an event. Next to your avatar there will be a “Go live” button and an arrow. Click on the arrow and select “Use an external encoder” from the list of options.


This will reload the interface and put “Stream” at the top of your “Settings” list. At the moment of writing, Vimeo supports RTMPS, RTMP and SRT. For this example, choose “SRT”, and several more options will appear: Stream URL, Stream ID, Backup stream ID, and Encryption.

Now, choose “SRT” in “Protocol” on the Media Station’s streaming page. Since Vimeo supports SRT in Listener mode, the device that streams to it must be using Caller mode. Thus, select “Caller” in the “Connection mode” on your Media Station.


Copy Vimeo’s Stream URL and paste it in the “URL” field on the Media Station.


You can leave “Source port” untouched or set it to 10000. This is the port through which SRT traffic will go.


Copy Vimeo’s Stream ID and paste it in “Stream ID” on the station.


This is all that is needed to start a livestream. If you haven’t yet changed the livestreaming mode, you can do so now and start livestreaming.

Optionally, you can adjust two more parameters:


  • You can enable encryption to ensure that the content remains confidential. To do that, tick the box “Encryption” on the Media Station. Select the same key length on the streaming platform and on the Media Station, copy the passphrase generated by the streaming platform and paste it in the Media Station’s “Passphrase” field.

  • You can also adjust latency to match your network environment and ensure smooth streaming experience. You can find out more about SRT latency and ways to calculate it in the official documentation from the developer of SRT, Haivision, here: Latency.



Other streaming settings


There are two more settings available on the latest AREC Media Stations: NDI streaming and SRT Listener streaming.


NDI streaming is enabled under “NDI settings”. Toggle the on/off button under “Stream” for the station to start outputting its mixed video as an NDI stream. This will make it possible to use the station directly as a webcam in videoconferencing applications that support NDI, in various software applications (e.g. NDI Tools, OBS), hardware (including other AREC Media Stations), and more. NDI streaming is independent from general RTMP/RTMPS/RTP/SRT livestreaming. Enabling it does not stop you from livestreaming, and livestreaming does not prevent NDI stream usage.


SRT Listener streaming is enabled under “SRT settings(Listener)” at the bottom of the “Streaming” page. Toggle the on/off button under “Stream” for the station to start outputting its mixed video as an SRT stream in this mode. When it is enabled, other devices and hardware can use “Caller” mode to access the station’s stream. To use OBS as an example, you can add a “Media Source”, untick “Local File” and then type the SRT URL of the Media Station: srt://ip address:port number


Accessing SRT Listener stream of the Media Station

Lastly, AREC Media Stations are also producing an internal RTSP livestream with the station's mixed video output. The link is:


  • rtsp://ip address of the station/movie


This RTSP stream can be pulled to monitor the Media Station, use it as a video source in applications (e.g. OBS), and other hardware. It also works the same way on many other AREC devices, e.g. KS-CC1, KS-CC2, DS-9CU. This stream can be used by no more than 6 clients at the same time.
